The Earth Biogenome Project (EBP) is a moonshot project that aims to sequence the genomes of the close to two million eukaryotic species known to inhabit earth. The EBP will have an unprecedented impact on many areas of Biology and its applications. The first step Identifying and mapping genes into genomes is essential to relate the genome sequence to the biology of species. Our group has extensive expertise in the area of gene identification, through the development of both computational (https://doi.org/10.1002/cpbi.56) and experimental methods (10.1038/ng.3988), as well in the application to detection of elusive gene families, specifically selenoproteins (10.1101/gr.190538.115). Our group participates in the GENCODE project, which aims to generate the reference gene and transcript annotation for the human and mouse genomes, and in Catalan Initiative for the EBP.
The 'La Caixa' Foundation has opened a call for post-doctoral fellowships to conduct a research project at accredited centres in Spain and Portugal, such as the CRG. The first vertebrate to be genetically sequenced in Spain, the Turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), has a much more refined visual system than other fish as it has evolved to adapt to the shortage of light of the seabed.
