Who cares and why does it matter? Understanding research impact.
Aula Room (PRBB 4th Floor)
The goal of this training is to give early career researchers, especially beginning graduate students, tools to reflect on the potential impact of their research. The workshop will focus both on practical and intangible impact, moving away from a strictly utilitarian view of the value of research outputs. Through a set of curated case studies, participants will explore how to engage with both academic and non-academic audiences by understanding how the same research output may generate very distinct interest (of note, they will also be exposed to the fact that a researcher has limited control over public perception of impact, and trainers will also lead discussion on strategies to navigate these interactions).
This training is divided into two sessions:
- Introduction to research impact. Trainers will present case studies in research impact from both basic and applied research. This will explore how research affects different sectors of society, as well as the impact on science itself. We will also introduce students to current forms of assessing impacts. Finally, we will discuss not only the positive aspects, but also cautionary cases of negative impact on society.
- Workshop. Participants will work in groups to explore the potential impact of a selected set of current research papers and other scientific outputs. This exercise will be guided to help them identify potential audiences and communication strategies, as well as pitfalls. Each group will then engage colleagues (and trainers) in a short pitch followed by discussion.
