How to visualize your scientific ideas and help your audience effortlessly grasp the essence of your research

When reading research papers, conference posters or viewing slide presentations, people look at figures first. To make these effective, we need to follow some fundamental principles and best practices that underlying good visual communication. These are simple to understand and very powerful when applied.

This is a comprehensive workshop that will cover:

  • Communicating with scientific vs non-scientific audiences
  • Visual perception and what we find intuitive
  • Colors: how to amplify, not ‘fancify’
  • Visual organization: how to structure to simplify comprehension
  • Eye-flow: effortlessly guide the audience through the design
  • Typography: how to create legibility, structure and aesthetics
  • Visual consistency: how to make multiple figures follow the same style

It will help PhD students, postdocs, and also senior researchers grasp how our visual perception work and how to apply knowledge from various disciplines to communicate effectively. You will learn how to visually communicate your complex research ideas and results so your messages are effortlessly understood by any specific audience. We will also discuss data visualizations, colors, typography, image file formats, and the knowledge will be applied to journal papers, project proposals, conference posters, and slide presentations. We comprehensively address all aspects of visual communication that are necessary for scientists.
Format: The workshop is interactive and hands-on. Participants are required to submit their figures in advance and we will comment on a selection from these materials and seek how to improve them.
