LundUniversity of Copenhagen"Deciphering the role of specialized translation in health and disease"Host: Fatima GebauerAbstract:Protein synthesis is essential for all cellular processes and understanding how protein synthesis is regulated to facilitate differentiation and establish cellular identity is pivotal. Importantly, the translation system is deregulated or hijacked in many diseases and understanding how deregulated protein synthesis contributes to the development of disease may facilitate new therapeutic approaches. We focus predominantly on modifications of ribosomal RNA based on the hypothesis that these imprint properties on the ribosome to install translation programs.
In this seminar, I will discuss examples of development and disease-mediated changes in protein synthesis, focusing on colorectal cancer. Furthermore, early attempts to develop compounds capable of targeting specific disease-related ribosomal subtypes will be presented.
