First, we will discuss some of the problems in conceptualizing fraud in science, taking its historical evolution into account, from the so-called classic epistemic fraud to the current bureaucratic fraud. Second, we will present data that support a notable increase in fraud cases on a global scale over the last three decades. Finally, we will address the Spanish case, based on different international studies, and show that the prevalence of scientific fraud in Spain is higher than expected, given its level of scientific output.
