Day 1: Principles of Light Microscopy

Day 2: Fluorescence Microscopy 

  • Introduction to fluorescence microscopy   
  • Fluorescent dyes and proteins   
  • Sample preparation
  • Optical sectioning and confocal microscopy 
  • Detectors for imaging and the airyscan technology    
  • Two-photon microscopy   
  • Lightsheet microscopy  

Day 3: Quantitative Bioimaging 

  • Live-cell imaging
  • Measuring molecular dynamics and interactions: FRAP, FLIP, FLAP, FCS, FLIM, FRET, FCCS
  • Biological electron microscopy: techniques and applications
  • Bioimage processing, data management, FAIR data   
  • Introduction to bioimage analysis   
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning in microscopy with a practical session 

Day 4: Super-Resolution Microscopy 

  • Introduction to super-resolution Microscopy 
  • Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM)  
  • STimulated Emission Depletion microscopy (STED) 
  • Single-Molecule Localisation Microscopy (SMLM) 
  • Bespoke microscope design   
  • Microscope platforms and core imaging units

Day 5: Tour and demo of the instruments and applications at the Advanced Light Microscopy Unit (ALMU)
