Bioinformatics Unit, MARData & GRIB, IMIMBridging Bioinformatics Service and Translational Computational Genomics.Abstract:Working as a core facility in a biomedical research center requires close collaboration with clinical researchers and a deep understanding of highly valuable but complex clinical and molecular datasets. It also provides a privileged view of major analytical challenges in translational research. In this talk, I will show how these challenges become research questions, and how the methods and insights generated through research, in turn, improve the service itself.
A major challenge in translational research is to move from high-dimensional molecular and clinical data to robust, interpretable, and clinically meaningful insights. This is particularly difficult in complex diseases, where heterogeneity and limited sample size often complicate the identification of robust multivariate patterns. Through a few examples, I will show how integrating omics and clinical data with bioinformatic tools, statistical approaches, and predictive modelling can move us toward actionable biomarkers, disease stratification, and treatment-response prediction in complex disorders. More broadly, the talk argues that core facilities can be active drivers of computational and translational research.
