Spatial transcriptomics has emerged as a powerful approach for studying gene expression while preserving the spatial organization of cells and tissues. As the field of spatial biology continues to expand rapidly, an increasing range of technologies and applications is becoming available. This presentation will provide an overview of the current landscape of spatial transcriptomics technologies, with a particular focus on in situ sequencing (ISS) and its applications in spatial biology.
ISS was originally developed in the laboratory of Mats Nilsson at Stockholm University and has enabled highly multiplexed detection of RNA molecules directly in tissue sections while preserving their spatial context. The development of ISS and its subsequent translation into the Xenium platform by 10x Genomics will also be discussed.
The Spatial Biology Platform at SciLifeLab, including its ISS facility, will be introduced, highlighting its capabilities and applications for studying tissue organization, cellular heterogeneity, and molecular interactions in their spatial context. The presentation will also discuss how different spatial transcriptomics approaches can complement one another, as well as the current challenges and opportunities associated with applying these rapidly developing technologies to biological and biomedical research.
