CRG reaction to €5B cut to Horizon Europe

CASTELLANO

ENGLISH

Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, has proposed that Horizon Europe, the EU’s future scientific programme, gets €89 billion of funding. This figure would represent a cut of 5 billion euros compared to what the European Commission proposed in 2018, resulting in a much less ambitious program than expected.

In response, the Scientific Council of the European Research Council (ERC) has issued a statement regretting the news, as the amount of funding means that science and innovation would stagnate for the first time in the history of the European Union.

The CRG declares its full support with the ERC’s Scientific Council. Luis Serrano, director of the CRG, says: “It is nonsense to cut research budgets when Europe has shown that it was totally unprepared to face the pandemic. Politician after politician says that research and innovation are the engines that power Europe. Well, this engine has stalled just when our future depends on it going full throttle. The future of the European Research Council is bleak, which is a shame because it funds excellent science and has had spectacular success, particularly in Spain. If we are going to compete with giants like the US and China, we must see much more ambition. The future success of Spain and the European Union depends on this. "
