Overview

Proteomics
The identity between the genome of a chimps and humans is over 99%. Yet, at the organism level, the differences are drastic and cannot simply be accounted for by the genomic differences alone. Proteomics focuses on proteins, which are the products of the genes - gene products – which account for the majority of differences in the phenotype. While the genome is static and genome based analyses can predict gene products, proteomics allows one to actually identify and measure the gene products in time and in space. Proteomics is thus a broad area that pertains to the study of proteins on a larger scale

The Proteomics Unit
The goal of the Joint CRG/UPF Proteomics Unit is to provide proteomic services to internal as well as external users. The services range from simple identifications of proteins to complex analysis´s involving multistage separations techniques, analysis of post translational modified proteins and quantization processes. Mass spectrometry (MS) and liquid chromatography (LC) is the cornerstone of the Unit. Among the mass spectrometers of the unit are two Orbitrap mass spectrometers which are both setup with LC based nano electrospray. In addition to LCMS the unit also uses off-line HPLC.

A general interest of the Unit is to test, implement and optimize proteomic based protocols that can be included in the Units repertoire of analytical research tools. Such analysis are typically carried out in smaller projects or via collaborations with other research groups.

For further information about the services, please contact the Head of the CRG/UPF Proteomics Unit, Eduard Sabidó (phone: +34 93 31 608 34).
