This is expressed through the FAIR data principles: that data should be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. However, the apparent simplicity of the FAIR acronym belies the considerable complexity involved in translating these principles into practice. The first and most fundamental requirement entails making datasets discoverable, i.e., Findable. If researchers cannot establish that a relevant dataset exists, they will never undertake subsequent steps to access and reuse it. At first sight, making data discoverable may appear to be straightforward. However, despite decades of effort in this area, an effective and comprehensive data discovery ecosystem has yet to be realised. Numerous challenges remain, including determining which data assets should be prioritised; defining the appropriate scope and objectives of individual initiatives; identifying the infrastructures, technologies, and architectural approaches best suited to supporting discovery; establishing or developing appropriate standards; determining the depth and granularity of data interrogation required to facilitate meaningful discovery; designing effective responses to successful searches; and identifying useful allied services. These issues will be explored through a combination of discussion and practical examples, highlighting established solutions, approaches, and emerging practices for improving the discoverability of biomedical datasets.
