'SEEING: Un ull i una caixa'. Una exposició sobre ressuscitació d'ulls humans

El Centre de Regulació Genòmica (CRG) i el col·lectiu artístic NAKED SPACE presenten “SEEING: Un ull i una caixa”, una exposició experimental, gratuïta i accessible que fusiona l'art immersiu i la divulgació científica per explorar la ciència a través d'una vivència multisensorial.

L'exposició ha estat dissenyada per presentar ECaBox, un projecte coordinat per Pia Cosma, del Centre de Regulació Genòmica (CRG), que pretén accelerar la recerca clínica ocular amb una idea innovadora: la creació d’un dispositiu que ressuscita els ulls de donants i els manté vius fora del cos humà.

Es tracta d'una experiència immersiva que inclou instal·lacions inflables, elements auditius i hologrames. Les persones visitants s’endinsaran en un recorregut dissenyat per reconsiderar què vol dir “veure” i per mostrar de manera sensorial com percebem el món a través de la llum i la foscor. També reflexionaran sobre els límits de la visió i la importància de la observació conscient, així com sobre el paper clau de la recerca bàsica en el desenvolupament de teràpies per tractar discapacitats visuals.

L'exposició tindrà lloc del dijous 5 al dissabte 14 de juny de 2025 al Centre Cívic Convent de Sant Agustí (Carrer del Comerç 36, 08003 Barcelona) i es presenta en català i anglès.

Com a activitats inaugurals, el dia 5 de juny de 18:00 a 19:30 s’ha organitzat un diàleg entre l’equip científic i artístic darrere de l’exposició per compartir amb les persones assistents les seves experiències en aquest projecte d’art i ciència, així com per fomentar el pensament crític i el debat obert i visites guiades a l'exposició a partir de les 19:30.

♦ Diàleg: Quan la ciència i l'art es miren

La ciència i l'art, quan es miren, són capaces d'observar la realitat de maneres complementàries, però des de llocs comuns: totes dues es basen en la curiositat, la creativitat i el pensament crític. En aquest diàleg s'exploraran les mirades d'una científica, una artista i un enginyer en tecnologia 3D en els abordatges dels reptes científics i de la seva conceptualització en una instal·lació artística. En els encreuaments d'aquestes mirades es troben fonts d'inspiració per a la creació de noves preguntes i de nous llenguatges de connexió amb el públic.

Presentant ECaBox: un projecte científic d’avantguarda

La discapacitat visual afecta 300 milions de persones a tot el món. D’aquestes, una de cada sis pateix ceguesa. La degeneració de la retina és, avui dia, una de les principals causes de pèrdua de visió i ceguesa. Aquestes malalties són sovint incurables i la recerca preclínica s’enfronta a una limitació fonamental: la manca de models similars als òrgans humans. Malgrat els avenços científics de la darrera dècada, moltes teràpies prometedores queden atrapades en l’anomenada “vall de la mort”, sense arribar als pacients.

Davant aquest repte, algunes aproximacions alternatives, com l’ús d’organoides humans, han marcat un punt d’inflexió en la recerca biomèdica permetent recrear entorns fisiològics, però no han aconseguit reflectir la complexitat global del teixit i l’òrgan. D’altra banda, la conservació d’ulls humans fora del cos encara és un repte, ja que només poden conservar-se durant un temps molt limitat abans de patir danys massius i irreversibles, cosa que impedeix utilitzar-los com a banc de proves.

En aquest context neix ECaBox (Eyes in a Care Box), un projecte pioner que reuneix set instituts de recerca de referència d’arreu d’Europa, coordinat pel Centre de Regulació Genòmica (CRG), a Barcelona, amb un objectiu comú: ressuscitar ulls humans de donants. Mitjançant la creació d’un dispositiu revolucionari, del qual s’està ultimant un prototip funcional, es podran conservar i revitalitzar ulls humans cadavèrics, mantenint-ne la funcionalitat i l’estructura durant un període prolongat de temps.

L’avenç representa un canvi de paradigma: per primera vegada serà possible estudiar la retina en condicions ex vivo, superant les barreres ètiques de l’experimentació amb humans i reduint la dependència de models animals. La seva aplicació transformarà la recerca en teràpies regeneratives, permetent avaluar-ne l’eficàcia i la seguretat amb una precisió sense precedents.
 

Aquest projecte ha rebut finançament del programa de recerca i innovació Horitzó 2020 de la Unió Europea (ref. ajuda núm. 964342).

The Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) and the artistic collective NAKED SPACE present "SEEING: An eye and a box", an experimental, free and accessible exhibition that fuses immersive art and scientific dissemination to explore science through a multisensory experience.

The exhibition has been designed to present ECaBox, a project coordinated by Pia Cosma, from the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), which aims to accelerate clinical ocular research with an innovative idea: the creation of a device that resuscitates donor eyes and keeps them alive outside the human body.

It is an immersive experience that includes inflatable installations, audio elements and holograms. Visitors will enter a tour designed to reconsider what it means to "see" and to show in a sensory way how we perceive the world through light and dark. It will also reflect on the limits of vision and the importance of conscious observation, as well as on the key role of basic research in the development of therapies to treat visual impairments.

The exhibition will take place from Thursday 5 to Saturday 14 June 2025 at the Centre Cívic Convent de Sant Agustí (Carrer del Comerç 36, 08003 Barcelona) and is presented in Catalan and English.

As inaugural activities, on June 5 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., a dialogue has been organized between the scientific and artistic team behind the exhibition to share with the attendees their experiences in this art and science project, as well as to promote critical thinking and open debate, as well as guided tours to the exhibition from 7:30 p.m.

♦ Dialogue: When science and art look at each other

Science and art, when looked at, are capable of observing reality in complementary ways, but from common places: both are based on curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. This dialogue will explore the perspectives of a scientist, an artist and an engineer in 3D technology in the approaches to scientific challenges and their conceptualization in an art installation. It is in the intersections of these approaches were we find sources of inspiration for the creation of new questions and new languages of connection with the public.

Introducing ECaBox: a cutting-edge scientific project

Visual impairment affects 300 million people worldwide. Of these, one in six suffers from blindness. Retinal degeneration is currently one of the main causes of vision loss and blindness. These diseases are often incurable, and preclinical research faces a fundamental limitation: the lack of models similar to human organs. Despite the scientific advances of the last decade, many promising therapies are trapped in the so-called "valley of death", without reaching patients. Faced with this challenge, some alternative approaches, such as the use of human organoids, have marked a turning point in biomedical research, allowing the recreation of physiological environments, but have failed to reflect the global complexity of tissue and organ. On the other hand, preserving human eyes outside the body is still a challenge, as they can only be preserved for a very limited time before suffering massive and irreversible damage, which prevents them from being used as a test bed. In this context, ECaBox (Eyes in a Care Box) was born, a pioneering project that brings together seven leading research institutes from all over Europe, coordinated by the Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG), in Barcelona, with a common goal: to resurrect human donor eyes. Through the creation of a revolutionary device, of which a functional prototype is being finalized, cadaveric human eyes will be preserved and revitalized, maintaining their functionality and structure for an extended period of time. This breakthrough represents a paradigm shift: for the first time it will be possible to study the retina in ex vivo conditions, overcoming the ethical barriers of experimentation with humans and reducing dependence on animal models. Its application will transform research into regenerative therapies, allowing their efficacy and safety to be evaluated with unprecedented precision.
