I. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

1. Can I apply if I have not submitted my Ph.D. thesis?

You can apply even if you have not yet received your Ph.D. degree; provided that you hold the Ph.D. at the start of the fellowship. For clarity, it is deemed that this requirement is fulfilled only when the thesis has been officially awarded by the university.

2. I have submitted a publication as first author. Am I eligible to apply?

As a minimum, applicants should have at least one first author publication in press or published in an international peer reviewed journal at the time of application. Submitted publications as first author will only be considered in exceptional cases. Publication updates are not accepted after the application deadline.

3. I already have postdoctoral training. Am I eligible to apply?

You are welcome to apply to the NCBS-inStem /CRG postdoctoral fellows program provided that your Ph.D. was awarded no more than four years prior to the call deadline and that you fulfill the other eligibility criteria.

4. Are non-European candidates eligible to apply?

There are no nationality restrictions.

5. I work already at NCBS or CRG, can I apply for the NCBS-inStem/CRG postdoctoral fellows?

Yes, you are welcome to apply to the NCBS-inStem /CRG postdoctoral fellows program .

6. Is there any age limit for taking part in the selection?

There is no age limit, but your Ph.D. must have been awarded no more than four years prior to the call deadline.

7. I was awarded my Ph.D. 5 years ago; will you take into account a career break due to maternity leave?

Yes, documented career breaks such as paternity and maternity leave (one additional year per child up to a maximum of three years) will be taken into account. Please indicate any career breaks in the application.

8. Can I apply if I do not fulfill one of the eligibility criteria?

If you do not meet ALL eligibility criteria (including reference letters), your application will be declared ineligible and will not be evaluated.

II. SUBMISSION

9. How can I submit my application?

Applications for the NCBS-inStem /CRG postdoctoral fellows program are accepted exclusively by email. Your  application together with the research proposal should be submitted to: crgncbsinstem@ncbs.res.in.
The application should be supported by two letters of recommendation from referees other than the collaborating PIs and submitted directly to: crgncbsinstem@ncbs.res.in. The collaborating PIs are also required to send sponsorship letters supporting the application to: Professor Apurva Sarin, Head Academics, NCBS (sarina@ncbs.res.in)

10. I made a mistake in my application and I have submitted it - can I change it?

No, you cannot make changes to submitted applications, and we will not do so on your behalf. Therefore please double-check your application before submission.

11. Can I submit two fellowship applications to the call?

No, you may only submit one application.

12. Should I have a host laboratory before applying?

Yes, before applying you should have identified a minimum of two host laboratories.

III. SELECTION PROCESS

13. Which are the evaluation criteria for the applications?

A committee comprising faculty from CRG and NCBS/InStem will review the applications based on the candidate’s scientific background, qualifications during the pre-selection, the scientific-technological quality, and originality of the proposed project  during the seminar given by the candidate.

14. Does the selection process involve an interview?

Yes, pre-selected candidates will be invited to attend an oral interview. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered by the NCBS-inStem /CRG postdoctoral fellows program.

15. Do I have to write a project with the application?

Yes, the candidate is expected to develop a research project in consultation with the laboratory heads (PIs) at both institutes. A key component of selection into the program is the ability of the candidate to, articulate a viable research program anchored in the two laboratories. The research project should be submitted  together with the application form to: crgncbsinstem@ncbs.res.in.

16. When will I know if my application has been pre-selected? When will candidates be informed about the final results?

Applications are accepted through the year, and the decision of the preliminary evaluation will be intimated within 4 months of submission.
