COURSES @ CRG: Summer Course Modeling for Systems Biology - 2013

Barcelona, Spain

We would like to invite you to the 3rd Practical Summer Course: Modeling for Systems Biology. The 2013 edition of this successful course is a joint initiative between the CRG and SystemsX.ch and will be supported by the new European network ERASysAPP. It will take place from Sunday June 9th till Friday June 14th, 2013 at the PRBB in Barcelona. The Systems Biology Summer Course aims to provide a broad introduction to systems biology, with a focus on dynamical modeling of networks, to an audience of PhD students and post-docs with a background in biology or bioinformatics. No prior expertise in modeling is required to attend the course. In addition to introducing researchers to new techniques and know-how, this course aims at fostering interactions between students and established figures in the field of systems biology.

Sunday: optional introductory session on elementary calculus and algebra (ordinary differential equations, linear algebra) and an introduction to Matlab. An understanding of these concepts and tools is highly recommended to be able to follow the course itself.

Monday – Friday: theoretical lectures will cover the following topics: dynamical systems theory, stochastic systems, frameworks and methods to model biological networks, multivariate and multidimensional data analysis, techniques for parameter inference, reverse engineering, biophysical and cellular models. All theoretical concepts of the course will be accompanied by a series of hands-on exercises.

Our teaching team consists of world-class external investigators, CRG and SystemsX.ch teachers, and a team of internal PhD and post-docs to provide assistance during practical sessions.

Teachers:

  • Fernando AMAT, Janelia Farm Research Campus, Ashburn, USA
  • Nicolas BUCHLER, Duke University, Durham, USA
  • Kai DIERKES, CRG, Barcelona, Spain
  • Dagmar IBER, ETH Zurich, Basel, Switzerland
  • Andreea MUNTEANU, CRG, Barcelona, Spain
  • Jordi GARCIA-OJALVO, UPF, Barcelona, Spain
  • Theodore PERKINS, OHRI, Ottawa, Canada

Registration

The number of participants is limited to 24, from which 12 places will be reserved for scientists from the PRBB and SystemsX.ch. The remaining 12 positions will be open to candidates from institutes worldwide. Priority will be given to people with a background in or transitioning to Systems Biology.

General registration fee: 300 EUR (includes participation in workshop, all the necessary tools to follow the course, didactic material, coffee breaks, lunches and a welcome dinner). Young scientists from the European area may apply for reimbursement of their travel costs (max. 500€/person). SystemsX.ch people should contact Jens Selige for information on financial contribution.

Registration for this course will close on Friday March 15th, 2013. Candidates will be selected based on their motivation and on relevance of the teaching material to their research project. Applicants will be notified at the very latest by Friday April 5th, 2013.
