ONE PROTEIN THAT REGULATES CELL DEATH IN RETINA DEVELOPMENT COULD EXPLAIN SOME DOWN SYNDROME PROBLEMS
The study, published on 9th December at Developmental Cell, shows the DYRK1A regulating role in apoptosis (cell death) of the Nervous Systems cells and, specifically in retina.
This find could explain some Down Syndrome features because DYRK1A gene is located the 21st chromosome. The researchers noticed that this gene is very sensitive to dosage. If we have one copy or three copies instead of two, it cause important effects in the Nervous System development.
