This is partly caused by how mammalian eggs are formed. Women are born with a limited pool of follicles containing future eggs. This so-called ovarian reserve will be used during every woman's reproductive lifespan to produce fertilizable eggs. Thus, female fertility ends once this pool of follicles falls below a certain threshold (in humans, ~1000 primordial follicles). Associated with the exhaustion of the ovarian reserve, there is a significant reduction in estrogen production, which causes menopause in humans. The onset of menopause sets off a cascade of adverse health effects in a woman's body. Thus, understanding the mechanisms that control the size of the ovarian reserve is vital for preventing women's age-related reproductive and health decline. In this seminar, I will present our recent studies revealing the mechanisms that control the establishment of the ovarian reserve in mammals, how this is maintained during adulthood, and discuss possible therapeutic strategies to prevent the age-related decline of the ovarian reserve.
