CRG Core Facility Technology Symposium: Super-Resolution Microscopy

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona, 14th December 2010
Organized by the Centre de Regulació Genòmica (CRG)

Symposium overview

In microscopy it has for more than a century been accepted as an unchangeable fact that spatial resolution in a microscope is limited by diffraction. Especially in cellular and molecular biology, many of the processes going on at the cellular level were thus left impossible to image in detail. Only in the last years has this view been challenged and in the last generation of light microscopes it has actually been overcome. Even though the fundamental ideas behind the different super-resolution approaches are very different they have in common that they are truly innovative. Super-resolution light microscopy is thus becoming available for biological research.

The symposium aims to give an overview over several of the technologies in this very recently established field. The potential of these methods will be illustrated in a variety of biological applications and address the intrinsic challenges in spatial resolution, multiple labels and imaging speed.
